April 7, 2014 - Santa Clarita, Calif. – The 11th season of Formula DRIFT opened to record crowds last weekend in beautiful Long Beach, California. At the end of qualifying, eight drivers from Team Achilles had qualified for the Top 32, including rookie drivers, Alec Hohnadell and Geoff Stoneback.
4 - Kenny Moen
18 - Dean Kearney
20 - Robbie Nishida
22 - Alec Hohnadell
23 - Daigo Saito
28 – Marc Landreville
29 - Geoff Stoneback
31 - Dave Briggs
Top 32 saw amazing drifting and very close battles for Team Achilles. Mechanical issues plagued Nishida and Saito during qualifying, and reared their ugly head again during the first round. Kearney competed against fellow Irishman Darren MacNamera in what was one of the closest battles of the round. Briggs’ first battle against Vaughn Gittin Jr. resulted in a One More Time call, which gave Briggs another shot at the former champion. Fellow Canadian, Marc Landreville looked strong in his battle with Fredric Aasbo. Rookies Stoneback and Hohnadell showed the crowds that they are a force to be reckoned with and got a nice jump on the Rookie of the Year race. Kenny Moen, who joined Team Achilles this season, was the only driver on Achilles rubber to make it to Top 16.
Moen bested Mohan in the Top 16 and Fredric Aasbo in the Great 8, which put him against 2013 champion Michael Essa in the Final 4. “Fast Kenny” lived up to his name, knocking out the former champ and heading to his first ever Formula DRIFT finals. He faced former champion Chris Forsberg in the final round, ultimately finishing in second place, giving the Norwegian driver his first ever podium in the Bridges Racing / Limitless Motorsports Nissan S14.
Round Two of Formula Drift gets underway on May 9th and 10th at Road Atlanta, the track where Daigo Saito took his first win last season. Team Achilles drivers Daigo Saito, Robbie Nishida, Kenny Moen, Dean Kearney, and Charles Ng will compete in the Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge at the Long Beach Grand Prix on April 11th and 12th!
